Mid Florida Foot, Ankle & Vein Clinic provides comprehensive vein care services for you and your family members suffering from arthritis, varicose vein, or other nerve pain symptoms.

Our experienced podiatrist will help ease your foot or ankle pain that might be preventing you from engaging in your day-to-day activities. You will also notice a significant reduction in spider and varicose veins, allowing you to move more freely than before.

If you want to lead a healthy and active lifestyle, your legs should feel good at all times. With our treatment, you will begin to feel good about your legs again. It will also encourage you to slip into comfortable clothes, as wearing long pants may be both impractical and uncomfortable in the warm weather.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

Ambulatory phlebectomy is an outpatient procedure developed by dermatologic surgeons that removes superficial veins through small, slit-like incisions in the skin. Ambulatory phlebectomy is a good choice for treating both asymptomatic and symptomatic superficial veins of the skin.

It is usually performed on larger veins that bulge above the surface of the skin and varicose veins. It is also rarely used on smaller veins. Ambulatory phlebectomy may be combined with other therapies in the treatment of venous disease including varicose veins. The procedure is not recommended for patients unable to walk on their own or wear compression stockings.

What You Should Know About Ambulatory Phlebectomy for Varicose Veins

  • The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and patients don't usually feel any pain during treatment.
  • The procedure involves four steps: The veins to be treated are outlined or marked, local anesthesia is injected into the skin, bulging veins are surgically removed segment by segment through small incisions, and graduated compression stockings are worn for a week or more after surgery.

Like Any Procedure, There Are Possible Risks!

  • Temporary bruising and swelling
  • Inflammation caused by small segments of vein that remain in the skin
  • Skin numbness caused by injury to adjoining sensory nerves
  • Allergic reaction to local anesthesia

Sclerotherapy for Varicose Veins or Spider Veins

For almost 80 years, sclerotherapy has been used to reduce the size and visibility of varicose veins and spider veins. With this treatment, your vein care specialist will inject the solution which irritates the vein, causing it to collapse and eventually disappear.

Sclerotherapy sessions for spider veins or varicose veins are about 15 to 20 minutes long and several sessions may be required depending on the size of the veins or the area to be treated. Sessions are held four weeks apart to give the treated areas time to heal. Patients experience minimal discomfort both during and after the procedure. With larger veins, patients sometimes feel mild cramping for a couple of minutes following the injection.

Results to Expect From Sclerotherapy Treatment

Results from sclerotherapy treatment are usually very good with between 50% and 80% of injected veins completely disappearing. It may take up to 6 weeks for the effects of sclerotherapy to be evident on spider veins and longer to see results for larger veins. Although veins that disappear will not come back, other veins may become visible in the same area and future “touch-up” sessions may be necessary.

Compression Stockings

Compression stockings are a specialized hosiery, designed to help prevent the occurrence of, and guard against further progression of venous disorders such as edema, phlebitis and thrombosis. Compression stockings are elastic garments worn around the leg, compressing the limb, exerting pressure against the legs, reducing the diameter of distended veins, and causing an increase in venous blood flow velocity and valve effectiveness.

Compression therapy helps decrease venous pressure, prevents venous stasis and impairments of venous walls, and relieves heavy and aching legs. Unlike traditional dress or athletic stockings and socks, compression stockings use stronger elastics to create significant pressure on the legs, ankles and feet.

Compression stockings are tightest at the ankles and gradually less constrictive towards the knees and thighs. By compressing the surface veins, arteries, and muscles, the circulating blood is forced through narrower circulatory channels. As a result, the arterial pressure is increased, causing more blood to return to the heart and less blood to pool in the feet.
